Jean Mermoz (1901-1936)

This French aviator who was born in Aubenton (Aisne) was a pilot of the French Airmail Service called the "Aéropostale" and one of the pioneer aviators of the line between Casablanca and Dakar across the desert.

In 1931, he was the first pilot who flew across the south part of the Atlantic Ocean. Within four days the mail was transported from Toulouse to Buenos-Aires. During the return flight the plane had a failure above the ocean and the pilot was rescued by a ship.

Mermoz was also one of the first pilots to fly from Buenos Aires to Santiago over the Andes.

In 1936 he disappeared at sea when he was flying the aircraft called "Southern Cross" off the coast of Dakar.
